ICE-CREAM WORKERS

New Industrial Award An industrial award for employee*, of iae-cream manufacturers within a 25mile radius of Wellington has been made by the Arbitration Court. Ths award operates for one year from March 21, 1938. < Hours of work are fixed at 44 a week from October 1 to March 31 and 36 rr week from April 1 to September 30. The daily hours during the Octo-ber-March period are to be eight on five daj’s of the week and four on the day of the half-holiday. During the April-September period daily hours of work are to be not more than eight, to be worked on five days of the week. The minimum weekly rates of wages are fixed as follows: —fce-cream milker (if employed), £6; assistant ice-cream maker, £5/5/-; ice-cream storeman, £,>: general hands. £4/10/-. Youths are to be paid rates ranging from £1 a wees for those under 17 years of age to ±3 a week for those between 201 and 21 years of age, there being go/- increase each half-year. Females over 21 years ■of age are to be paid £2/7/6 and those under 21 rates ranging from 17/6 to £2/2/6. Overtime is to be paid for at the rate of time and a half, with a minimum payment of 1/6 an hour. Sunday work is to be paid for at the rate ot double time. One week’s holiday on full pay is to be granted each year. When a worker is required to go baeu to work after the completion of a day s work, and notice has not bean given the previous day, 1/6 tea money is to be paid. The question of including fruit coo, stores in the award was referred to the court, which considered that these should more properly be made parties to one of the awards covering workers engaged in cool stores
