NEW NUMBER PLATES

Annual Registration Of Motor Vehicles COLOUR GREEN THIS YEAR The transport division of the Post Office is arranging that motor-vehieie registration plates will be available for the annual relicensing process on Monday, May 2. All vehicles must carry the new plates on June 1. As a means of prompt identification of the current number-plates, a different colour combination is adopted every year, and the coming year’s plates will bear the figures in white on a light green ground. The first registration plates issued in 1925 were also green, but slightly lighter than the 1938-39 plates. The symbol dividing the hundreds from the thousands resembles a Maltese cross. Provision was made for 202,100 cars, the numbers from 1 to 2000 being reserved for rental and private-hire cars. In the allocation of numbers for private cars, Auckland will have the lowest series, commencing with 2,001, the numbers rising in each district to the south as far as Wellington, 111,701 to 135,000. Then the numerical series will continue with Invercargill, starting at 135,001, increasing northward as far as Timaru, then crossing to the West Coast and proceeding through Greymouth, Westport, Nelson and Blenheim districts to Christchurch, where the numbers will range from 176,001 to 202,100. Detailed allocations are as follows:

Plates with initial letters are issued for licensed motor-vehicles other than private cars.
