TRAINING TEACHERS

More Model Classes Desired X EDUCATION BOARD’S REQUEST With the idea of making more adequate provision for teacher training in Wellington, the Wellington Education Board has asked the Minister of Education to approve of the establishment of additional model 1 and model 2 classes.

The principal of the Training College, Mr. F. C. Lopdell, and the senior inspector, Mr. D. McCaskill, recently conferred with the chief inspector of primary schools, Dr. J. W. Mellwraith, on the .subject of further model classes to be used for the training of students at the Training College. Visits were paid to Thorndon. Mitchelltown, Karori and Karori West, and the following firoposals were then placed before the Training College Board of Studies for consideration :— (1 )• That two model 2 classes be established at Mitchelltown as soon as possible after the completion of remod oiling there: (2) that one model 1 class be established at Thorndon in the detached building at the entrance to the ground from Brook Street: (3) Karori West is ideally situated for a rural model 1 school. There is every prospect Hint a new room will shortly be required there. It was recommended that this room be erected as early as possible and a permanent model 1 class be established at the school. A model 1 class is defined in the regulations as a rural public school of grade 2 with one teacher and not more than 40 pupils. A model 2 class is a junior school under one teacher, with not more than 45 pupils from the primers up to standard 11. The model classes would remain part of the main school, but their organisation would be largely directed by the principal of the 'Training College and by Mr. Johnson, lecturer in method. The education board has sent forward to the Education Department a request from the board of studies that the department be asked to approve of the appointment to each of these classes of suitable assistants carrying the salaries attached to model 1 and model 2 classes in connection with the Training College.
