TUNNEL UNDER MOUNT MESSENGER
I. - Preliminary Survey Being Made By Telbgruph—Press Association. • Stratford, March 22. With the object of a.scbrtaining the possibility of tunnelling through Meant Messenger, one of the worst climbs on the ■Wellington-Auckland main s highway, a survey is being made by the Public Works Department, according to information received at Stratford. The tunnel, if constructed, would eliminate the present tortuous climb over the mountain and possibly reduce the distance by about two-thirds. “It is merely a preliminary survey." said Mr. F. W. Lindup, engineer in charge of the Public Works Department at Stratford. "We are just en deavouring to get ahead, of a possible work that might arise." Mr. Lindup explained that as with all departmental work a considerable amount of planning for the future had to be done, and it did not mean that because Mount Messenger was being surveyed the project would come up for immediate consideration.
