STAFF REDUCTION
Oamaru Woollen Mills
OFFICER OF DEPARTMENT TO MAKE INQUIRY
An officer of the Department of Industries and Commerce has been instructed to visit Oamaru to investigate the position which has arisen at the Oamaru Woollen Mills, where, it is reported, heavy reductions in the staff have been made. This was stated by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Hon. D. G. Sullivan, in reply to an urgent question asked by the Rev. A. H. Nordmeyer (Government, Oamaru) in the House of Representatives on Saturday. Mr. Nordmeyer asked whether the Minister had seen the newspaper report that drastic reductions had been made in the staff of the Oamaru Woollen Mills, allegedly due to the heavy importation of woollen goods into the Dominion, and whether he would instruct his officers to investigate the matter immediately so that steps might be taken to correct the position. “I have seen the report,” Mr. Sullivan replied, ‘‘and I. have instructed an officer of the department to proceed immediately to Oamaru to make an investigation. I shall communicate with the member for Oamaru as soon as the inquiry is completed.”
