His Excellency the Governor-Gen-eral opened the annual school fete of the Hutt Valley High School, at Lower Hutt, on Saturday afternoon, and her Excellency Lady Galway attended the Wellington College garden party held in the college grounds. Lord and Lady Galway attended morning service at St. Andrew’s Church, The Terrace, Wellington, yesterday.

Rear-Admiral the Hon. E. R. Drummond, commodore commanding the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy, arrived at Wellington by plane from Dunedin yesterday.

The Hon. Mr. Justice Callan, Auckland, and the Hon. Mr. Justice Kennedy, Dunedin, have arrived in Wellington to attend a sitting of tne Court of Appeal, which will open to-day. Archbishop J. Panieo, the Apostolic Delegate, has returned to Auckland from the north, states a Press Association message from Auckland, and Is a guest at the Mater Misericordiae Hospital prior to his departure for Sydney to-morrow. He will be accompanied by, a number of other visiting prelates of the Roman Catholic Church who have been attending the centenary celebrations.

The Rt. Rev. J. Boss, S.J., Vicar Apostolic of Hiroshima, Japan, the Rt. Rev. J. Darnand, S.M., Vicar Apostolic of the Navigator Islands, and the Rt. Rev. J. M. Aubin, S.M., Vicar Apostolic of the South Solomon Islands, who have been attending the Roman Catholic centenary celebrations, arrived at Wellington from Auckland on Saturday.

Dr. R. Welton-Hogg has returned ro Wellington from Hawke’s Bay. Mr. A. R. McElwain, publicity manager for Fuller-Hayward Theatres Ltd., returned to Wellington from Auckland yesterday.

Mr. C. N. Haslam, former senior inspector of schools for Taranaki, has left New Plymouth for Christchurch, where he will spend his retirement. Dr. C. F. Morkane, Christchurch, has received word that the British College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has selected him for the distinction of a fellowship of the college, according to a Press Association message from Christchurch.

Captain A. G. Hardy, who has been acting as stevedore for Hooker Bros., New Plymouth, has been appointed manager of the New Plymouth waterside bureau and central pay office. Mr. W. R. J. Smythe, manager of the Auckland branch of the Australian Mutual Provident Society, passed through Wellington during the weekend on his way to the South Island. He was accompanied by Mrs. Smythe. Senior-Sergeant G. H. Lambert, who is in charge of the uniform branch of the police at Hamilton, will leave by the Tainui at the end of this month on leave to visit England. During the four months of bis absence he will be relieved by Sergeant M. Farrell, Wellington.

Mr. F. Ramsbottom, mayor of Patea, has been appointed one of two delegates to represent New Zealand at the international conference of Druids to be held at Hull in July. Mr. Ramsbottom has been a Druid for 36 years, more than eight years of which have been spent as a Grand Lodge officer.

Mr. John Dewar, who has retired from the position of Surveyor-General of the Federated Malay States, is a native of Otago, and as a young man was on the field staff of the Lands and Survey Department in Taranaki and the King Country. He joined the Malayan Civil Service in 1906 as an assistant surveyor.

Mr. I. M. Kidd, a director o£ Messrs. Newton King Ltd., who recently resigned his position, which he has held for 1G years, as an executive member of the New Plymouth staff, was met at a gathering of the staff at which opportunity was taken to farewell him on his departure to take up farming in the Pio Pio district. Mr. Truby King, managing director, on behalf of the staff presented Mr. Kidd with a chiming clock. Later Mr. Kidd was met by the directors and branch managers, Mr. King presenting Mr. Kidd with a cheque on behalf of the company in recognition of his valuable services.
