Exports And Killings LARGE INCREASES SHOWN Exports of meat from New Zealand during the five months of the 1937-38 season to February 28 showed increases in all classes as compared with those for the corresponding period of last season. Chilled beef, at 80,211 quarters, showed an increase of 7299 quarters, and frozen bee! was up by 10,926 quarters. Shipments of lamb increased by 180,857, and mutton by 91,972 carcases. Pork showed an increase of 6355 carcases and boneless beef and veal were up by 50,294 bags. Details of the shipments of meat for the four months are given in the following table, the totals for the corresponding period of last year being shown for comparative purposes

In addition, 80,211 quarters of chilled beef (London, 78,813 qrs.; Southampton, 1030 qrs.; and Honolulu, 368 qrs.) were shipped during the five months, as compared with 72,912 quarters for the corresponding period of last season. Shipments of boneless beef were 99,014 bags, as against 48,720 bags, an increase of 50,294 bags. Increase in Killings. Killings of lamb in the North Island for the five months were 3,278,313 carcases and in the South Island 1,904,689, a total of 5,183,002, an increase of 138,221 compared with those from the corresponding period of 1936-37. Killings of mutton totalled 1,018,-677 carcases (876,065 in the North Island and 142,612 in the South Island), compared, with 581,633 carcases for the live months of 1936-37, an increase of 437,044 carcases. Killings of pigs for the five months totalled 351,987 carcases, as compared with 355,693, a net decrease of 3706 carcases. Porkers were up by 5750 carcases, but baconers showed a decrease of 9456 carcases. Beef and veal showed large increase. The Meat Board has been advised by its London office that the following retail prices were being quoted for New Zealand lamb and mutton retailed in London during February. To-day’s quotations for other metals, with those for the previous week in parentheses, are as follows: — Pig iron: Home trade, 100/- a ton (same); export, not quoted.
