Championship Meeting Opens SURPRISE IN MILE Wilson, Wellington, Fails By Inches By Telegraph—Press Association. Christchurch, March 11. The national amateur athletic championships opened at Lancaster Park this afternoon in cool and overcast weather, with a fair track. .<> Th.' day’s principal event, the mile, drew a field below the standard of recent yeans. A. R. Wilson (Wellington) was favoured for the title bout but, after making the pace most of the way, was passed by S. J. Wade (Auckland) halfway round the last lap. Wade went on to win in 4min. 25 l-ssec. Wilson made a desperate effort down the straight, but was beaten by inches and collapsed at the tape. The heats of the sprints and quartermile gave promise of some interesting racing in the finals to-morrow. AV. J. Fitzsimmons, New Zealand champion, qualified in both sprints, but will be fully extended to retain his titles. C. V. Evans, West Coast, North Island,, former middledistance champion, who is making' a return to the track, won his heat of the quarter-mile in 51 l-ssec., running easily. He will meet H. J. WILSON’S FOURTH SECOND Has Yet To Win- Mile Title WELLINGTON SPRINTERS PROMINENT Dominion Special Service. Christchurch, March 11. The surprise victory of S. J. Wade (Auckland) over the Wellington champion, A. R. Wilson, in the mile was a feature of the programme at the opening of the New Zealand jubilee amateur athletic championships at Lancaster Park yesterday. , , , . In a field below the standard of recent years Wilson was considered practically a certainty for the title, but after making the pace for nearly the whole journey he was unable to stavp off the challenge of the Auckland man and was beaten by

inches. Wade's time-was 4min. 25 1-5 sec. Wilson did not appeare to be in firstclass form. He had already run second in the mile championship at three national meetings, finishing behind L. C. McLachlan in Wellington, V. P. Boot in Dunedin, and AV. A. C. Puliar in Auckland. Now he took his second place for a fourth time.; His tactics in settin gthe pace and staying 'at the front of the field gave him the hardest part of the work at the finish. When Wade passed him 220 yards from home he made a determined attempt to recover the lead, maintaining his effort to the tape, where he collapsed, beaten by inches. Wellington men took a prominent part in the sprint heats. J. Eastwood was a good second to AV. J. Fitzsimmons, the title-holder, in a heat of the 100 yards!, run in 10 l-osec. In the 220 yards he beat Fitzsimmons by a narrow margin in 22 4-ssec. C. Robinson, AVellington, won his heat of the 220 yards comfortably in 23 3-ssec. Of the finalists; G. Quinn, Hawke’s Bay, Empire Games representative, impresses most for the 100 yards. He won his heat going away from his field in 10 sec. Fitzsimmons went better over the longer distance, which he took very easily. ft is likely Quinn will win the 100 yards, but the 220 remains very open. C. V. Evans, AVest Coast, North Island, returning to the truck with a long list of championship successes behind him, ran another impressive race in the quarter-mile 'in 51 1-osec., and may offer plenty of opposition to H. J. Tyrie, the Otago Empire Games representative, in to-day’s final. Tyrie was second to M. C. Baker (Auckland) in 52 2-ssec. in his heat. C. Robinson, AVellington, did not start. The heats of the hurdles were notable for the performances of P. Bowie (Auckland) and C. R. Bradweil (Canterbury). Bowie appears a likely winner in the 120 yards event, and Bradweil may run him very close in the 220 yards. In_ the shorter distance each returned 15 2-ssee., with following wind. In the 220 yards Bradweil recorded 25 l-ssec., beating the record by one-fifth of a second, but he had a following wind. R. J. AA’atson, Otago, led all the way in the three miles walk, D. Kingston, Hawke’s Bay, following on his heels, with F AV. Dukes a yard or two away. They finished in that order, AVatson recording 23min. 17 4-ssec. - C. Hausman, Wellington, took third place in the long jump, losing opportunities with two no jumps. The event was won by H. W. Wilkins, Canterbury, with 22ft. 3Jin. R- G. Pilling, Otago, was second with 22ft. Ilin., and Hausman jumped 22ft. 07-Bin. There was little'between the placed men, A. A. Cameron, Otago field champion, was unplaced in this event, but won the discus easily with 129 ft. lOiu.
