FRUIT EXPORTS
Shipping Accommodation
The shortage of shipping space for the Dominion’s fruit exports was re-< ferred to by Mr. K. J. Holyoake (Opposition, Motueka), in an urgent question addressed to the Minister of Agriculture, Hon. W. Lee Martin, in tlie House of Representatives yesterday. "I am informed that tlie space which has been made available by the Overseas Shipping Committee is considerably less than that contracted for some months ago,” said Mr. Holyoake.
The Minister said that Mr. Hoiyoake’s note to his question did not. represent the true position. “All the space contracted for has been made available to the Fruit Board.” added Mr. Martin. “Shipping space difficulties have arisen through the vagaries of the season. The fruit is coming forward earlier than expected and in much greater quantities. The steps taken by Ihe board to secure accommodation from the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee are likely to result in i satisfactory solution of the shipping t rouble.” The Minister mentioned that a complete statement of the space position bad already been made in "The Dominion” by the secretary of the Fruit Board, Mr. W. Benzies.
