More than 1000 pages of concentrated information about one of the most interesting countries in the world is contained in the South and East African Year Book and Guide for 1938. which, in addition to its general informative sections, lias 64 pages of maps. The statistics available at the date of printing of the general census taken on May 5, 1936, are included, although the editor states that interesting items in connection with the census will not, be available until the next edition. A detailed account of the financial position of the Union of South Africa and the import and export figures are given. The effects of the Ethiopian War on South Africa are contained in a section dealing with the defence of the Union, together with an account of a national scheme for physical training. Air travel, too, both civil and military, is fully dealt with. For those interested in tlie fauna of tlie country, details are given of the country’s game and its habitats, together with information for the general use of tourists visiting the game areas. . . . For the benefit of motorists visiting tlie Union, the various motor routes are set out, with tlie principal road distances. Even although the book does not claim to be a road guide, it gives an astonishing amount of useful information to enable the planning of n motor tour. Tlie index contains more than 4000 place names, and for practical purposes can lie considered as a gazetteer.
