OUTPUT OF TIMBER TO BE LIMITED

Bolstering Prices In Europe In order to prevent the prices of timber from falling, controllers of the industry in Europe contemplate limiting the quantity cut in Norway, Sweden, Finland. Czechoslovakia and Poland, principal Continental producers, said Mr. C. Peto Bennett, for 60 years a London timber merchant, who arrived at 'Wellington yesterday by the liner Rangitata. Mr. Bennett said that there was no shortage of timber in England. Although England drew almost entirely upon Canada and the Northern European countries for her timber supply, there was a good deal of afforestation within the United Kingdom. On account. of the quantities available, prices had fallen, and a limitation of the cut was proposed, which would probably result in the price again rising. TITe demand for timber in England was not so keen as it had been recently, because most of the extensive rebuilding and housing programmes undertaken a few years ago had been completed. The position in regard to newsprint was somewhat similar; prices had shown signs of falling, on account of the quantity available, and the output had been limited. He himself was not directly concerned with newsprint production.
