Labour’s Unfulfilled Promises

Sir, —The Government seems to have plenty of money to spend on iron works, but when it comes to spending money to carry out former political promises the Labour Party falls down most lamentably. ' ... The Railways Department’s attitude is typical regarding its share toward the reconstruction of Waterloo Quay. This department owns all the property down one side, at least, of Waterloo Quay and yet it refuses to pay its share of £lO,OOO along with the Harbour Board and the City Council. The Labour Government promised the farmers of the Makerua Plains that it would build a main highway bridge across the Manawatu River to avoid the toll bridge. The Government has been two years and a half in office, and has not yet honoured its promise to these supporters ■of the Labour Party. I The leaders of the Labour Party are more concerned with placating their enemies than in honouring their promises to their own supporters'. Their psychology seems to be that they are sure of their supporters and therefore they have no need to spend any money or favours overthem. In short, they adopt the shortsighted policy of neglecting their best friends, and now they are wondering why whole districts are turning against the Labour Government. The undue haste in closing down Parliament makes it obvious that the Government is in a funk and their friends and even radio announcers seem to fear the results of the next election.—l am, etc., WORKER.
