A fine of £5 was imposed by Mr. J. G. L. Hewitt, S.JI., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday, on Leslie Wallace Anderson, Lower Hutt, waiter, aged 26. for deserting from the Akaroa at Wellington. It was stated on defendant’s behalf that he wished to be near his mother, who was ill with pleurisy, and that the ship had not been held up as he had arranged for another man to take his place.
