| Ruth Wyeth Spears FACING A NECK OPENING FOR A GOLLA FROCK

rpHE. neckline of many of the new-

est skirtwaist frocks is collarless, i with a short slashed opening in the centre front. Often this, front opening is just long enough to permit the waist to slip over the. head, as the one shown here. Again, the opening is a little longer and has a bound buttonhole each side, with a button at each end of a narrow strap to make a fastener, or a contras'ing tie. is sometimes slipped through the • bottonboles. If bound buttonholes are used, they should be made in the front- of the waist before the neck opening is slashed or faced, then when t’i' facing has been made the buttonhole. openings may be cut in it, turning the raw edges under and hemming them down to the wrong-side of the buttonhole binding. The front opening and the front of the neckline should be faced before the shoulder : seams of the waist have been sewn up. Cut the facing piece to fit the, neckline, as shown here in the diagram at A.. Place it right side down

on the right side of the waist front an baste it in position along the line when the opening is to be cut. Now, stitcl. along the neckline and around this basting tapering, the stitching to a poim at the end of .the basting as shown. The next step is to slash tlie nee. opening along the line of the basting, then overcast the point of the opening with closely spaced stitches, as shown in diagram. Turn the facing to tlie wrong side of the waist through the slash and oaste along the turned edge, as shown in this diagram, to hold it- ina firm line while being pressed. When this has been done, turn under the raw edge of the facing and sew along it. with running stitches catching every fifth or sixth stitch down to the waist. Finish the back of the neck edge with a narrow bias facing, then join the shoulder seams. Clip the neck end of the shoulder seams on the bias and press them open. Whip these bias ends down to the front and back facings, as shown here in diagram C, then overcast the other raw edges of the seams.
