WANGANUI TO-DAY

Fine Field In Cup

GREAT RACE LIKELY Form In Other Events (By Carbine.) To-day Wanganui, one of the oldest clubs in the Dominion, opens its autumn meeting and presents the strongest cup field it has secured in recent years, despite the scratching of Cuddle, who ie amiss, and is likely to be turned out for a spell. Sergia (Taranaki and Egmont Cups), The Buzzer (Auckland Cup), Catalogue (Winter Cup), Master Cyklon (Pahiatua Cup), Lowenberg (New Zealand Derby), are m the field. The race should be well worth seeing. The course can be expected to be in excellent order as it is always at its best a little while after rain. The first race, the Westmere Hurdles, is timed to start at noon. The day s card is as follows: —

WESTMERE HACK HURDLES, of “ 16 °- One njlle four furlongs and a halt. Riotous" 10 9 Kentucky Song 9 7 Royal Artful Dod ser 9 » y Romance 9 11 Lifeguard ... 9 0 Davistoek ..9 9 Master Norval 9 0 Count Willonyx 9 7 . The field is not a strong one. Davistock is an interesting recruit, but most likely backers will favour Royal Romance, Riotous ;and Kentucky Song.

HANDICAP, of £l3O. Five

Dark Eagle .75 Surmount and Footloose may carry most support, and the best backed of the others is fairly certain to be Russian /Ballet, who ran a close second to Amigo at Marton early in the season.

Silvanus’s recent form is so good that even with her substantial weight she will be in big demand. She can sprint and stay, and won over a middle distance' at Hawera comfortably. Ilias lias been disappointing, but mav be suited by the turning course. Conveyor’s chance looks fairly bright, and one of the more likely of the lightweights is Student Prince. Backers may choose Conveyor, Silvanus and Student Prince.

2.45 p.m.— TAYFORTH HACK HANDICAP, of £l3O. Seven furlongs and a quarters Icing 9 5 Royal Choice 8 5 Malibu 9 1 Captain Bonny Glow . 813 Treville 8 3 Alloa 810 Lady Hoariri 8 0 There is likely to be support for Malibu, Icing and Bpnny Glow.

3.30 p.m— WANGANUI CUP, of £GOO. One mile ana

Catalogue’s general form makes him a fair prospect. At his best The Buzzer should be one of the hardest to beat, while New Plymouth and Hawera form pointe strongly to Sergia. Lowenberg and Master Cykjon are recent winners, and ijrnong the lightweights are possibilities in Francis' Drake, The Bigot and Brazen King. There should be a big pool, with lhe Buzzer, Sergia and Catalogue in good demand. ’

4.15 p.m.— FLYING HANDICAP, of £2ao. Six

furlongs. Laughing Silvanus ... 7 9 Lass 9 O Notium T ? Debham ... 8 8 Airing 7 - Race Call ... 8 4 Aiwa! " 0 Recent form suggests good races from Laughing Lass, Airing and Race Call. Sjlvanus should go well .if reserved for this race, and Aiwai should be a distinct possibility. A fancied trio may be Laughing Lass, Aiwai and Airing.
