A bright inventor in New York has had an idea for saving those tiresome "runs” in our stockings. lie is making stockings without any knees, as this is apparently where the tension is greatest and most of the runs start. These stockings have a neat hole all round the knee-cap.

A Melbourne woman who was 100 years old last ■week has’“expressed her admiration of the youthful generation of to-day. .She said, "I well remember the women of GO years ago and their crinolines. How they got those things into a carriage I don’t know. And the hats with gardens on them. They were dreadful. I much prefer the shred of cloth that women wear on their heads now.”

You can '“proof" your own raincoat by giving this home treatment: Lay coat out flat and rub beeswax well into the garment until it is well coated. Do not be alarmed at the “messy” appearance of the coat at this stage. With a hot iron, press thoroughly on both sides. The heat makes the fibres of the coat absorb the wax, and renders the garment waterproof.

From America comes a novel manicure idea. In one New York beauty parlour there is a nail-polish blending bar, with no fewer than 47 different shades which are blended to the whim and fancy of each individual customer. A few drops of several shades are mixed to match the wearer’s make-up or gown or jewellery.

One delicious bracelet worn by a smart I’arisienne consisted of a row of tiny bottles dangling from a gold- band, ending with a bottle of fruit salts.

Dog collars are coming into vogue again for formal evening wear. At a reception in Paris recently a wide diamond collar was worn with a flowing smoke grey tulle dress, and at a fashion parade one of the mannequins was wearing a two-inch collar in brilliants with a large cobochon ruby in the centre front. ■»

Ostrich feathers arc stressed for autumn and early winter millinery. For afternoon wear, uncurled feathers are used for toques and for trimming on brimmed models. Curled tips, in graded colours, arc worked into charming diadem effects for evening wear.
