More Changed Names
To add to the list of changed placenames, we have Mangaweka, which was originally Three Log Whare, Fox/ ton (Awahou township), Bunnythorpe (Mugby), Brunner (Taylorville), Lower Hutt (Aglionby), Marton (Tutaenui). Stratford was at first known as Stratford-on-Patea. No one can regret that Mellemskog, which is Norwegian for “middle of the bush,” has gone and the more melodious Eketahuna substituted. There is an amusing story behind the changing of Birmingham to Kimbolton. The secretary of the association that opened up the land in those parts was a Mr. Burr, and it was proposed to name the township after him. Burr-town was the suggested name, but the gentleman did not wish himself to be so honoured. The committee then compromised by calling it Birmingham, Which sounded much the same. Later, confusion with the great English city made another change desirable, and Kimbolton was chosen.— J.W. (Lyall Bay)
