MATTHEWS AND BOOT TO APPEAR
Evening Sports Meeting
The Wellington Amateur Athletic Association has received cabled advice from Mr. A. C. Kitto, assistant manager of the New Zealand Empire Gaines team in Sydney, naming the New Zealand athletes and cyclists who will definitely be competing at the sports meeting at the Basin Reserve on Tuesday night. The athletes are C. H. Matthews, winner of the three and six miles events at the Games in record time; V. P. Boot, winner of the half-mile in record time; G. Quinn, the sprinter; W. A. C. Pullar, the miler; and Miss D. Strachan, sprinter and broad-jumper. The cyclists are G. R. Giles, F. J. Grose and R- Ulmer. The three Trinidad athletes, Ashmead, Stanford and Cumberbatch, will also appear. CANADIAN ATHLETES Unable To Tour New Zealand Cabled advice has been received by Mr. 11. I. Austad, chairman of the council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, from Mr. 11, McCormick, manager of the New Zealand Empire Games team, that the Canadian athletes will be unable to tour New Zealand as had been hoped. Their only appearance will be at Auckland. While in Sydney, Mr. McCormick investigated the possibilities of the Canadians appearing at several New Zealand centres on their way home, but the proposal has now been found impracticable.
