MEXICO’S “GOLD SHIRTS”

A year ago Current History published an article, “Inside Mexico, ’ by a special investigator. It contained these words: “With the Spanish tragedy before our eyes, there is a good deal of discussion as to whether similar events are not in store for Mexico.” In the light of a cable message yesterday this appears to have been a prophetic utterance. It is reported that the first clash between Fascists and the authorities has occurred, with 20 deaths. Also a desperate battle is said to have taken place over the possession of some towns where the Fascists, or “Gold Shirts,” were strongly entrenched. The writer of the article mentioned went on to say that only a prophet would dare to declare with any finality that Mexico would or would not avoid the catastrophe which had overtaken the Spanish mother country. He pointed out that President Cardenas had acted with a good deal of firmness in dealing with incipient revolt. For months after he assumed office the “Gold Shirts,” “a dangerous band of admittedly Fascist gunmen,” remained a constant threat to law and order. In August, 1936, evidence that they were plotting an armed uprising was discovered. Cardenas broke up the gang and sent its leader into exile. It appears now that the “Gold Shirts,’ so far from being extinguished, have initiated a dangerous rebellion. Up to the present the cordial relations that have existed between Mexico and the United States have been an invaluable aid to the stability of the Mexican Government. If the Fascists are in any strength in Mexico their activities may yet add another problem to the anxieties confronting President Roosevelt. Ihe United States is already deeply concerned over the development of Fascism in the South American republics. With Fascism north of the Panama Canal the President’s anxieties will be increased.
