McCORMICK’S BOWLING

(By “Burwood.”) In writing the thumbnail sketches of the Australian team which appeared in “The Dominion” on Friday, I mentioned that Hammond was caught by Gregory at sfiort-leg in the first innings of the first Test match at Brisbane in the 1936-37 season. A correspondent, B. F. O’Brien, writes pointing out that Gregory was not in the Australian side in the first Test match of that series. On looking up the scores. I find that my correspondent is right, and that it was Robinson who caught Hammond off McCormick. In gathering my data about McCormick's whirlwind bowling at the start of this match, I looked up “The Cricketers’ Spring Annual for 1937.” which is edited by Sir Pelham Warner, a past'English Test captain and a member of the present English selection committee, and there in cold print appeared the following: “Worse was to follow, so far as England was concerned, as Hammond fell to the first ball he received. Gregory catching him. at short-leg, with McCormick again the successful howler —and throe wickets to his credit for only 16 runs.” I have to thank Mr. O’Brien for pointing out the mistake.
