EARLY MORNING FIRE

City Store Extensively Damaged Serious damage was caused to a store belonging to E; W. Mills and Co., Ltd., in Cable Street, Wellington, when- a fire broke out in the building early yesterday morning. The contents of the store, including a large number of rolls of newsprint, also suffered from fire and waler. The' outbreak was discovered shortly after 3 a.m. by Mr. F. Buckley, a driver employed by S. Wright and Co., Ltd., carriers, Wanganui, who have a depot at the eastern end of the building fronting Barnett Street. Four engines from the central station and one from Thorndon answered the call. The. fire was under control after a quarter of an liour, but it was two hours before the brigadesmen were satisfied that there would be no further. trouble. The damage was confined practically to the western half of the store, but throughout the building skylights were cracked by the heat. The parts of the store occupied by Wright and Co., W. Capper and Son, Ltd., carriers, Levin, and Co-operative Motor Repairs, Ltd., were not affected by fire or by the water whi'ch ran through the premises. About £6O worth of blankets consigned through the Wellington Express Co. were charred and damaged by water, and water also affected part of a stack of 20 tons of cement stored by the same company. Another stack of cement containing about 50 tons was clear of the floor and escaped damage. About 90 tons of roofing iron was stacked some distance from the seat, of the fire, and it is believed that damage done to it 'by water will be fairly extensive. Normally the Wellington Express Co. has a considerable quantity of goods in the store. The trucks and the contents of the store are all covered by insurance. Six motor-trucks received minor damage by fire.. Three of them belong to Hardy’s Transport, Ltd., ami two were loaded with general goods for the north, having arrived at the store shortly after ihjdnight. The loads were not affected. Of the other three vehicles, two are owned by the Wellington Express Co., the main lessee of tlie store, and one by G. Inniss.
