BIGAMOUS MARRIAGE

Woman Committed For x Sentence Described by Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle as a technical offence, a charge of bigamy was preferred in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday before Mr. W. F. Stilwell, S.M., against Stella Lory, Christchurch, aged 33. The evidence showed that accused, having married Alfred Noel Wakelin on July 15, 1925, went through a form of marriage with Robert Leslie Smith on April 27, 1937, knowing that she was not free to marry. Wakelin instituted divorce proceedings at Hamil-/ ton and obtained a decree nisi in 1933, butjas the costs were not met, the decree was not made absolute till September 23, 1937. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence at the Supreme Court, Christchurch, on February 11.
