HOROWHENUA SHOW

Brilliant Weather For Opening RESULT OF JUDGING Dominion Special Service. Levin, January 28. Greeted by brilliant weather on the opening day, there is every indication that the Horowhenua Agricultural and Pastoral Association's thirty-second annual show and carnival will be even more successful than its predecessors. Excellent organisation and, on the whol*’. generous support by the live stock breeders of the Horowhenua aud surrounding districts, resulted in an entry of stock strong both in numbers and quality. The judges carried out their duties during the morning and early part of the afternoon, ami, while in many cases, the prize-winning animals were easily selected, there were numerous classes in which the placed exhibits were separated only after much deliberation. As the morning progressed, streams of cars laden with farmers and their families entered the showgrounds to inspect the various types of stock as they were paraded in the showring or penned in the cattle sheds. The centre of a strong Jersey district, the Horowhenua show is again noteworthy for the display of Jerseys, there being nearly a hundred entered this year. With the exception of the Red Polls, in which there was ouly one exhibitor, all the cattle classes were well supported, the calf club classes also being generously represented, and indicative of the interest taken by the clubs in the national effort to improve still further the standard of live stock in New Zealand. Entries for this show total almost 1400, an increase of 100 over last year s figures. Cattle are a little better numerically than for the 1937 show, but there is a slight falling-off in the horse, sheep and pig classes. To compensate for this school entries, affected last year by the infantile paralysis epidemic, have jumped from 121 to 325.

Horse events were the day’s most interesting attraction, there being a generous representation of the inevitable sideshows and amusement booths as well as a number of trade exhibits. The show will be continued to-morrow, coming to a conclusion in the evening.
