HONOUR FOR MISS BATTEN
International Federation’s Gold Medal (Received January 27, 7.25 p.m.) Paris, January 27. Miss Jean Batten has been awarded the gold medal of the International Aeronautical Federation “for the greatest flying achievement in 1937.” LICENCE TO HOLD DANCE GRANTED London, January 26. At the Wimbledon Police Court the New Zealand flying woman, Miss Jean Batten, through her agent, John Ashford Smith, was granted an occasional licence for a public dance at the Palais de Dance at Merton on January 28. Smith said he was organising dances throughout the countryside in an effort to collect funds for another flight. It was really Miss Batten’s dance, but the management of the ball would take half the receipts. Miss Batten informed the Associated Press that she did not know the dance would be licensed, and that she had now cancelled her appearance. She said she had no plans for a flight, but intended to remain in England for some time. •
