AURORA BOREALIS

Brilliant Display Seen London, January 26. The most brilliant display of the aurora borealis for many years was seen in England and in many parts of the Continent. It appeared soon after sunset and continued for several hours. The phenomenon, which is attributed to a huge sunspot, interrupted the beam radio service to Australia ami caused havoc with cables. It also caused panic in parts of Europe where such a spectacle was unknown within memory. Austrian villagers fell upon their knees and prayed when night was turned into day with a flaming coloured curtain across the sky. Peaks in the Swiss Alps were lit up with magnificent colours.

A London message on January, 20 stated that one of the largest sunspots observed since 1875, when records were begun at Greenwich Observatory, was clearly visible in London to the naked eye on the upper right hand of the orb ns an elongated dark speck. The area was estimated at 3,500.000,000 square miles.
