OBITUARY

Mr. G. Renner The death occurred in Wellington, ou Tuesday, of Mr. George Renner, at the age of 86. The eldest son of the late Captain F. Renner, he was born in Manchester and as an infant spent several years at sen with his parents in the China Clipper Strathfleldsaye. As a young man the late Mr. Renner was employed in the Post and Telegraph Department, in Wellington. He made rapid progress as a telegraphist and at the age of 21 was promoted to postmaster at Balclutha. After acting in that capacity for some years, he began a journalistic career extending over half a century. He was the . first editor of the “Mataura Ensign,” published at Gore. It was at Kaikoura, where he established the “Star,” that he found the opportunity he desired to express his views on political affairs and to promote the interest of the community. Always advanced in outlook, he strongly supported the land policy of the Seddon Government, and conducted a vigorous campaign for the settlement of Crown-lands held on lease by large runholders.. Mr. Renner was a Justice of the Peace, chairman of the local County Council for several terms, president of the racing club for at least 20 years, a. member of the Marlborough Land Board and of the Hurunui Licensing Committee, and assisted in some way almost every local activity. Leaving Kaikoura in 1905. he edited several newspapers in the North Island. and finally joined the reading staff of the “Press.” Christchurch, where he remained until about 12 years ago. During his residence in Otago he took a keen and prominent part in cricket, and in his later life he acted as umpire in both Christchurch and Wellington. Mr. Renner was twice married, and is survived by one daughter and nine sons, Mr. W. H. Craig The death occurred on Monday of' Mr. W. H. Craig, a well-known solicitor of Melbourne. For many years he was chairman of directors of Gordon and Gotch (Australasia) Limited, and at the time of his death was on a business trip to West Australia with officials of the company. The funeral will take place at Melbourne on February 2. Colonel G. A. M. Buckley Colonel G. A. Mtrclean Buckley, well known in Canterbury sporting circles some years ago, died recently In England. Colonel Buckley was a ,son of the Hon. George Buckley, Heathcote, and was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch, from 1878 until 1880. Later he farmed “Lagmhor,” a wellknown station near Ashburton. He took a keen Interest in hunting mid polo, as well as other outdoor sports. He accompanied Sir Ernest Shackleton part of the way on one of his expeditions to the South Pole. About the beginning of the present century he left for England, where he spent a good deal of his time sailing round Europe in his own yacht. He joined the Army during the Great War, and became a lieutenamt-colonel, aud was in command of an Irish regiment. He was awarded the order. Commander of the British Empire and the Distinguished Service Order. Several times after the war he visited New Zealand. Mrs. Emily Chisholm The death occurred recently of Mrs. Emily Chisholm, of Wellington, while on a visit to her daughter in Christchurch. Mrs. Chisholm was the wife of Mr. F. J. Chisholm, formerly chief postmaster at Dunedin, and deputychief postmaster at Wellington. She hud many friends throughout New Zealand, who will deeply regret her death. Mrs. Chisholm leaves two sons, Mr. N. Chisholm and Mr. K. Chisholm, Wellington, mid two daughters, Mrs. W. Parke, Wellington, and Mrs. McLeodSmith, Merivale, Christchurch.

The funeral was held yesterday at the Karori Cemetery, after a short service, conducted by the Rev. Percy Faris, at the Wesley Church. Taranaki Street.
