John L. Sullivan’s Status
“Constant Reader” writes from Kakiiriki, Mangaweka: “Would you please let me know through ‘The Dominion’ if John L. .Sullivan, the boxer, ever held the world heavyweight boxing title?” John L. Sullivan was heavyweight boxing champion of the world from 18S2 until JS92, when he was beaten for the title by J. J. Corbett. Prior to this time there were various claimants to the title, but, owing io'there being no recognised control of the sport, it. was generally acknowledged that the champion of England held great sway. . John L. Sullivan, however, is recorded in boxing history as the first recognised boxing champion of the world.
