APPEAL FOR RETURN TO HONESTY

Evasion Of Contracts Condemned

JUDGE’S ADVICE TO SCOTS COLLEGE BOYS

‘•The first essential to success iu life is honesty. I don’t mean the common honesty, but the honesty which enables people to say of a man that his tvord is fils bond,” said Mr. Justice Ostler, who addressed pupils of Scots College at the prize-giving ceremony last night. “There seems to be a new school of thought in this country, which has actually had Acts passed by Parliament in support of its doctrine, that it. is not morally wrong to evade irksome contracts. Stick to your own word and in the words of Oliver Wendell Holmes, ‘Own up, pay up, and shut up.’ ”

“Whatever calling you may embrace when you leave school you will get most happiness but of it if you regard that, calling as a chance to serve your fellow men,” continued Mr. Ostler. “So long as you regard that, calling as a means of service and not as a means of getting rich you will be doing something for the betterment of the world.” The year had been a difficult one, broken by the infantile paralysis epidemic, said the Rev. J. R. Blanchard, chairman of the board of governors. The staff had tackled the situation splendidly, however, and had seen the school through with wonderful success. The board wished to thank the parents’ association and the old boys’ association, he continued. “The college is too young yet to epeak of any great traditions, but we arc conscious of tbeir being formed and the old boys’ association is playing a leading part in building them up,” concluded Mr. Blanchard. “I suppose I have done my share on such occasions as this to criticise the modern boy, to point out hie weaknesses and our efforts to overcome them, and perhaps to compare him unfavourably with those of an earlier period,” said the principal, Mr. J. R. Sutcliffe, in his report. “If I have done it, it is solely because I fear that the homely virtues of gratitude and good manners are in dan ger of becoming old fashioned, but, while endeavouring to preserve them, it behoves one to remember the exasperatingly bewildering and complex world into which the modern boy is born. “It is idle to judge the difficulties and the problems which beset the modern boy by those of our own youth. His is a different world . . different iu kind and in very essence. . . . Into this amazing world our children have been brought, and in it they are feeling their way. The problems that were ours are not theirs. We who belong to, a generation which understood the dignity of leisure, the pace of whose life was the pace of the horse, must try, in order to help modern youth, to understand its environments, the difference between our world and theirs.”
