THE SOCIAL ROUND

Twenty-First Birthday Party A delightful coming-of-age party was given at the Oddfellows Hall, Greytown, recently, by Mr. and Mrs. W. G. K. Wiggins, in honour of Isobel, sister of Mr. Wiggins, and only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Wiggins, early settlers of the Wairarapa. The guest of honour wore an artistically braided frock of pale pink silk net over taffeta. Mrs. Wiggins was in a gown of royal blue lace over taffeta. The evening was spent in dancing and competitions, interspersed with songs by Miss James (Palmerston North), Mrs. H. E. Webster and Mrs. W. McMinn, Mr. E. Graham, and humorous recitals by Mr. H. Graham, Featherston. During the evening Mr. George J. Petherick, J.P. (Wellington) congratulated Miss Wiggins, who was accorded musical honours. Mr. Wiggins replied on behalf of bis sister. After the 21 candles on the beautiful pale pink birthday cake had been extinguished by Miss Wiggins it was cut by her and handed round. On behalf of the guests Mr. and Mrs. H. G. Carter thanked Mr. and Mrs. Wiggins for their hospitality. More than 100 guests autographed the golden key presented to Miss Wiggins, among them being visitors from Wellington, Levin, Palmerston North, Woodville and Masterton. Auld Lang Syne and the National .Anthem concluded a very happy evening. Party at Lyceum Club

In the absence of the president, Mrs. J. O. Andersen, who is at present visiting Christchurch, the vice-presidents of the Lyceum Club arranged a very cheerful Christinas party in the clubrooms, Lambton Quay, on Wednesday night. The gathering was presided over by Miss M. E. P. Ahern (senior vice-president), her co-hostesses being Mrs. Henry and Miss Keddell. The blue-curtained walls made a splendid background for the bowls of roses, poppies, Canterbury bells and gladioli with which the room was lavishly decorated; but the most arresting feature of the decorations was probably the Christmas tree, laden with gifts which were later distributed to the guests. A very enjoyable programme was contributed by the various circles, each group presenting one or two items. The young people’s circle (convened by Miss Marjorie Mulford), organised a competition, and the play-reading circle (convened by Miss O’Donoghue) presented a very amusing play which concerned the ancient Romans and Britons, the costumes of the characters being in keeping with the times. Other items were contributed by the penwomen’s circle (convened by Mrs. Masters), the international circle (Miss Keddell), and the glee circle (conducted by Madame de Mauny) sung several carols. Miss Old also gave some amusing items. During the evening a Christmas'cake, attractively decorated in the club colours of blue and gold, was cut, and pieces given each guest. Ice cream was served at supper-time, when delicious cakes, savouries, and other party fare were obtainable. Several presents were given the club by members and from the junior circle. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and “God Save the King” brought a very happy party to a close. United Services Club

Pink, mauve and blue sweet peas made the theme of the decorations for the five o'clock party given by the United Services Club at their premises on Wednesday. The large crowd of visitors enjoyed a thoroughly entertaining hour or two; the room itself, and the entrance hall where many medals are on display, provided much that was of interest to outsiders.
