Returned Home

Mrs. W. M. Peacock and Miss Jean Peacock have returned to Eltham from a visit to Wellington.

Mr. and Mrs. Everard White and family, who have been staying at Paraparaumu Beach, have returned to Masterton.

Mr. and Mrs. D. Buchanan, Lansdowne, Masterton, have returned from a visit to Taupo.

Miss J. McLaren has returned to Masterton from a visit to Hawkes Bay.

Mrs J. Curtis has returned to Stratford from a holiday at Christchurch. Mrs. H. Abraham, who has been the guest of Mrs. F. J. H. Nancarrow, Wanganui, has returned to Dunedin.

On Holiday

Mrs. Horace Smith, Wellington, and her daughter, Miss Joan Smith, will arrive at Christchurch to-day for the Beckett—Tingey wedding, at which Miss Smith will be a bridesmaid. They will stay at Warwick House. Mrs. Martin, Wellington, is the guest of Mrs. J. Kennedy, Masterton. Mrs. J. Farrell is a Wanganui visitor to Patea.

Miss Olga Larsen, Dannevirke, is the guest of Mrs. H. M. Besley, Hawera.

Visitors to Wellington

Mrs. P. L. Phillips has arrived from New Plymouth to spend Christmas at Wellington. Mrs. Harcourt is an Eltham visitor to Wellington.

Mrs. E. Nelson, Napier, is visiting Wellington.

Mrs. G. H. P. Fitzgerald, Eltham, is spending a holiday at Wellington.

Returning From Overseas Mrs. T. A. Hunter, Wellington, who has been visiting England, will return to New Zealand on January 29.

Returned from Abroad

Mrs. John Winlove, Waipukurau, who has been visiting England and the Continent, returned to New Zealand by the Rangitane, which arrived at Wel T lington from London yesterday. Miss Betty Olptiert returned to Wellington from England by the Rangitane yesterday. Mr. and Mrs. Somerset Playne arrived at Wellington from England by the Rangitane yesterday.

Garden Circle Meets

The Pioneer Club Garden Circle recently held their final meeting for 1937, at which Mr. R. M. Porteous gave a most interesting talk on roses. He referred to the importance of drainage, pruning and hoeing in the cultivation of these dignified flowers. In judging a rose the first rule of the National Rose Society of England is “A good rose is one which has form, size, brightness, substance and at the time of judging is in the most perfect phase of its beauty,” Mr. Porteous said. At the conclusion of the address Mr. Porteous gave members a list of loading exhibition and garden roses. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the lecturer for his helpful talk. Miss M. Cooper presided at the meeting. and Miss A. Kane, president of the club, presented prizes w’on at the circle’s recent flower show and congratulated members on their successful year. The following donated special prizes Mesdames J. J. Reich, R. W. Kane, H. Wardell, W. Smith, NeylonButler, W. Duncan, E. J. Righton, S. T. Silver, N. Henderson, R. Arlow, A. R. Gower, J. McKenzie, A. J. Du Pont, H. J. Rule, Lee, Misses A. Kane, V. Jacobsen and M. Cooper. Two pleasing displays _ that were much admired at the circle’s show were Mrs. E. J. Righton’s exhibit of oranges, lemons and native flora, and Mrs. J. J. Reich’s roses, lupins, aquilegias and clematis. During the afternoon Miss E. Isaacs was presented with a handsome leather bag in appreciation of her services as secretary to the circle. Afternoon tea was served and brought to a close the circle’s activities for 1937.
