FORT DORSET SHOOT

Special Reserve Practice

A practice shoot by the special reservists who have been under training for three months will be carried out to-day at Fort Dorset. The men will be inspected by Major-General J. E. Duigan, C. 8., D.S.O. After only three months’ training it is nqfc to be expected that the special reservists are capable of manning the guns completely by themselves, and the key positions will be held by highly-trained personnel of the Royal New Zealand Artillery. The targets will be towed by the Government st<xpier Janie Sed'don. A number of the reservists have applied to join the Royal New Zealand Artillery as recruits and, as far as possible, all those who come up to the required standards will be given permanent employment in the regular forces. The number of vacancies, however, is limited and therefore not all the reservists will be. able to enlist. During their three months’ training, the reservists have received instruction in' gun drill, range-finding, and the operation, care, and maintenance of searchlights and the engines supplying power to them. They have also had training in certain subjects which are common to all arms of the service. The more important ot these are physical arid recreational training, foot drill, weapon training with the rille and the Lewis gun. Those who so desired have been given the opportunity of attending the Technical College, where they have been provided with free education in a wide range of subjects.
