Charged with keeping a common gaming house, Bernard Frances Corrigan was fined £11)0, with costs 10/-, in tins Magistrate’s Court. Wanganui, to-day. Vincent Hickey, charged with assisting Corrigan in conducting the business, was fined £25.
Detective-Sergeant J. Robertson sai l Corrigan had five previous convictions in connection with breaches of the Gaming’ Act and on four occasions bad been fined£loo. ' ~ Mr. R. Brown, who appeared for Corrigan, made a strong plea for leniency and told the court that Corrigan w:ip giving up the business of bookmaking. The magistrate. Mr. J. H. Salmon, said that ,jipart from betting activities, Corrigan was quite a good citizen. However, he could not impose a fine of a lesser amount than previously.
