DANZIG POGROM
Outrages Organised By Nazi Police STREAM OF REFUGEES Jewish Appeal To League Of Nations SHOPKEEPERS ATTACKED By Telegraph.—Press. Assn. —Copyright. (Received November 3, 8.55 p.m.) London, November 3. The Danzig correspondent of the “Daily Herald” says ‘the World Jewish Congress, which is appealing to the British, French and Swedish Foreign Ministers to check pogroms in Danzig, has notified the League of Nations that the Nazi Government police have organised antiJewish outrages, and has requested the restoration of law and order. Refugees are streaming across the frontier to escape the almost indescribable bestialities officially planned and perpetrated as a prelude to the totalitarisation of the free city, where the Polish Nationalists are the only nonNazi party left. The Polish community denies allegations by the Government organ that they are responsible for the excesses, in which Storm Troopers led members of the Hitler Youth in attacks against Jewish merchants in Danzig, Langfurt and Zoppot. Goods bought from Jewish shops were destroyed and the shops were picketed preparatory to launching a street pogrom in which armed and semi-uniformed bands attacked Jews. Storm Troopers smashed windows and shop signs, destroyed merchandise and thrashed Jews, one of whom was killed.
The police merely hurried spectators past the scenes of the outrages, except in the busiest street of Danzig, where they interceded with the demonstrators, who thereafter contented themselves by throwing shoppers out of Jewish shops and ordering the premises to be closed.
The marauders continue to terrify the Jewish population of 8000, and are boycotting Jewish doctors and lawyers, while Storm Troopers outside the house of the League High Commissioner, Herr ■Burkhardt, are preventing any appeal for justice. Furthermore, the minorities do not trust Herr Burkhardt, who is a Government nominee, and recently washed his hands of Danzig’s “internal politics.”
