Belmont Meeting

Mrs. Bennett presided over tr fair attendance of members and friends at a recent meeting of the Belmont Women’s Institute. Mrs. Williams displayed a varied and charming assortment of Christmas novelties, and also explained the making of these. The materials required, she said, were ingenuity and patience, which, judging by the quality, quantity and variety of novelties displayed, the speaker was thought to possess iu abundance. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mrs. Williams. The winner of the monthly competition, “best flowers in my garden..” was won by Mrs. Prestige, who also won the competition for the best thrift article. x Upper Hutt. The recent meeting of the Upper Hutt Women’s Institute was fairly well attended, Mrs. Griffin, president, being in the chair. Miss Watson read the report of the Hutt Vallfey Federation half-yearly meeting, which she and Mrs. V. Williams attended as delegates. During the afternoon Messrs. Wale and Davis demonstrated the use of a washing-machine. Following were the results of the competitions:— Thrift article, Mrs. Hyslop 1, Mrs. Harper 2, Mrs. H. Williams 3. Pot of jam, Mrs. S. Braid 1, Mrs. Eves 2, Two Christmas gifts, costing not more than 2/-, Mrs. S. Braid 1, Mrs. V. Williams 2. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Collie, Manderson, McCurdy, Murray, 0. Hugh, McGregor, Miller, Cliff, Polson and Rogers. Ohakune. The October meeting of the Ohakune Women’s Institute, held in the Scout Hall, was presided over by Mrs. Hardie, who extended a welcome to old and new members. A demonstration of hairpin work was given by Mrs. McLeod, and was of much interest. The social halfhour was occupied with items by Airs. Nation, Misses Hammond and Carver. The competition for puff pastry resulted as follows-Mrs. Burney 1, Mrs. Bradshaw 2, Mrs. Cure 3.

Pre-Wedding Party

About 00 people were present at, an enjoyable gift evening given recently by Mrs. Downey, Mrs. Dotson, and Mrs. Mong, in honour of Miss Margaret Vernon, who is shortly to be married to Mr. Peter Long. The bride-elect received many useful gifts. The evening was spent in dancing, games and competitions, Mr. S. Reed acting as M.C. Items were given by Mr. S. Reed, Mr. and Mrs. Mathie, Mr. and Mrs. Bluedon, and Miss Hetty Tunley.
