VARIED DISPLAYS

Entertaining Programme Arranged THE Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association will be celebrating a double event, this year. 'Die holding of a Royal Show on its grounds would alone be a notable event, but in addition the association is arranging special attractions to mark the jubilee of Palmerston North. Presidents and oliicials of A. and P. associations all over New Zealand will be present, and special train accommodation is being arranged to transport 180 children and 50 adults from Wellington to Palmerston North. The association has gone to expense to see that the show will be a success, and a party of Russian Cossack riders has been specially brought to New Zealand to give riding exhibitions at the show. This is considered the boldest venture Hie association has yet made for the entertainment of its patrons. The riders are a troupe of worldfamous horsemen who have already thrilled thousands at shows in Australia ; their masterly horsemanship and spectacular stunts will provide something entirely new in show entertainment in this country. Chariot Racing Events.

So popular were the chariot races organised by the association last year for the first time in New Zealand, that they are to be repeated this year, and it appears that they are to become a permanent feature of shows at Palmerston North. Miss Gladys Hall, winner of last year's race, will again compete, and the Russian Cossacks will also race in two heals.

I'ivc chariots are now available, and with the added experience gained by competitors in the first races last: June, even more thrills will be provided lor the spectators. It is a difficult task to teach horses the art of racing abreast in a chariot, and a still more difficult task to handle them, but entrants for the events have been training extensively. The New Zealand Kennel Club is to hold its annual show at. Palmerston North this year, and an exhibition of dogs of all breeds, colours and shapes will be still another attraction. It will be the first time that the kennel club has held a national show at Palmerston North, and a new feature will be a parade of every dog taking part in the show.

The greater part, of the dog judging will be done on the second night, and special seating accommodation has been arranged so that patrons will be able

to see the dogs as they parade before the judges. The Department of Agriculture has also arranged a comprehensive display of its activities, ranging from the collection of bugs to the breeding of plants.

Model Aeroplanes On Show. Milson Aerodrome has become a favourite gathering place among model aeroplane builders for the holding of their flying meetings, and the national model aeroplane competitions were held at Palmerston this year for the second time in succession. A special section of the show has been set aside for the exhibition of flying and scale models. Exhibits from all parts of New Zealand will be seen. Primarily a stock show, the Royal Show this year will include the most complete and representative exhibition of animals yet; staged in New’ Zealand. Entries have been received from Invercargill, Whangarei, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty. Hawke’s Bay, Otago, Canterbury, Marlborough, Blenheim and many other parts of New Zealand, so that competition will be keen. The second day of the show will be devoted to the entertainment, of visitors, and will really be in the nature of a people’s day. The great, attraction will be a grand parade, in which 45 men of the Manawatu Mounted Rifles will take part, together with the visiting Russian Cossacks. The array of side-shows is expected to be the biggest for many years. Parade Of Pigs. There are to be several innovations. On the first day there will be some Inin ting events, and a parade of female pigs, both of which arc uew ideas. .School ponies are also to be featured. On Saturday the programme provides for a number of military events including a military ride by the Manawatu Mounted Rifles. On that afternoon, too, there will be two trotting races, a section of the jumping competitions and tent-pegging competitions. There will also be a display of farming implements. The Royal Show stock section will be on exhibition on Thursday and Friday only, and the whole of Saturday will be devoted to a gala festival. The profits of the show are to go toward the fund for the provision of a new roof for the grandstand, which was damaged by a hurricane some yeilrs ago.
