Conducting Gaming-house

Pleading guilty to a charge of conducting ;i gaming-house raided by the police on October 25, John Sydney Cormack, aged 29, motor-driver, was fined £4O, in default six weeks’ • imprisonment, and allowed three days to pay. Detective-Sergeant McHugh, conducting the police case, asked for a heavy penalty, stating that 35 persons, including girls and young women, were arrested on the premises. Not only vvere the girls gambling, but some were drinking beer out of bottles. "This is the worst class of gaming-house we have had in Auckland,” be said, “and the worst I have seen in 23 years’ experience.”
