NEW CATHEDRAL FOR AUCKLAND

Synod Approves Principle

By Telegrapli—Press Association. Auckland, October 20. The importance of the time factor with regard to the building of a cathedral was stressed by the Rev. R. G. Coats when addressing the Auckland Synod on his motion that synod “should coinmend the cathedral project to all men and women of good will throughout, the diocese iu order that the diocese may proceed with the building of a cathedral on the site set apart by Bishop Selwyn, and thereby avail itself of the generous benefaction of the late Miss Mina Tait Horton.” The time for the building of the cathedral was not fixed in any arbitrary manner, added Mr. Coats, but it was fixed by the terms of Miss Horton’s will. The approaching centenary of the province and that of the arrival in New Zealand of Bishop Selwyn were also important considerations. “Another time factor is that, in 1939 we will be celebrating the jubilee of the translation of Archbishop Averill to the bishopric of Auckland,” said Mr. Coats. “We have an archbishop of whom we might all well be proud. The amount of money required, judged by present costs, was £150,000, a small sum for the erection of a cathedral. The first portion should cost. £70,000 at present rates, with the addition of fees and other necessary expenses. Canon E. H. Strong expressed the opinion that all possible efforts should be made to show gratitude for a benefaction the like of which did not always present itself. He had no fears for the young people who might) have to carry on the work, and it might be a good thing for the Church as a whole if some of the older ones were pensioned off and did not hinder the aspirations of young people, but let them have a say of their own.” (Applause. ) The resolution was, adopted.
