Celebrations

Mr. and Mrs. E. Ransom Myers gave a most delightful party at the National Club last night to celebrate the connng-of-age of their daughter, Miss Joyce

Myers. . , , The lounge and the mam club room were beautifully decorated with crystal bowls of arum lilies, masses of . red broom and green troughs of lilac, freesias, anemones, ranunculi, forget-me-nots and a host of other colourful spring flowers. Supper was served in the artistically decorated dining-room, where pride of place was held by the birthday cake, which was cut by the guest of the evening. The cake, which was in tones of white and pastel gieen, was centred with a silver ladder at the top of which hung a gold key with the figures “21.” From the ladder ran pastel green ribbons which ended tn the hands of tiny silver-clad kewpies, one at each corner of the square base. During supper the health of Miss Myers was drunk with musical honours. The evening was devoted to dancing and amusing competitions, interspersed with pleasing Items. The guests were received by Mr. and Mrs. Myers, the latter wearing a frock of black triple marocain with self spots, made in tunic style. With it was worn a corsage spray of flowers in tones of gold. Miss Joyce Myers was in a striking frock of black satin, over which was worn a redingote of green .stiffened net. White wood fibre flowers were worn at the waist, and a wreath of similar flowers at the back of the head.

The Hawke’s Bay Women’s Club was gay with a spring motif in gold and yellow on a recent afternoon when Mrs. T. Gilray and Mrs. W. J. Henderson were joint hostesses at a bridge and mah jongg party given for Mrs. W. J. Johnson, a Wellington visitor to Hawke’s Bay. Mrs. Gilray wore an effective frock of black mariette trimmed with gold and black brocade, Mrs. Henderson was in a tailored frock of black georgette, and Mrs. Johnson wore a navy blue ensemble. Those present were Mts. Kinross White, Mrs. J. Mason, Mrs. H. Glazebrook, Mrs. F. N. Fussell, Mrs. F. Gardiner, Mrs. H. Bernau, Mrs. J. Bernau (Wellington), Mrs. R. Sutton, Mrs. T. S. With a gipsy encampment for a setting, the junior circle of the Lyceum Club held a most successful concert at the club rooms last night. There was a good attendance, the audience being most enthusiastic. Spring flowers arranged in artistic fashion round the room gave an air of cheeriness which was enhanced by the background of vivid foliage and golden broom adorning the stage. A play and various items were given and the evening concluded with the serving of a homemade supper.

A picturesque touph was given to the gipsy play by the gay costumes of the performers, who were all appropriately dressed in Romany fashion. Those who took part were Mesdames K. Conner and Toulson, Misses K. Fuller, B Duff, M. Mulford, and M. McLuskie, and two assisting artists, Messrs. G. East and D. Walshe. Miss Duff was heard in a violin solo, Mrs. Conner, Miss K. Fuller and Mr. East in songs, and Miss McLuskie in recitations. A comedietta was given by Miss M. Mulford and Mr. R. Cross, another assisting artist. The accompanist tor the evening was Mrs. P. Kindrod, who was presented with a shoulder spray. The hostess for the occasion was Mrs. K. Conner, who was wearing a frock of peacock blue lace. To Say Farewell Mrs. L. S. McClurg, Napier, gave a farewell party for Mrs. H. L. Benjamin on a recent afternoon, when her : guests played bridge or gathered in the wide-windowed drawing-room. A soft spring colour scheme introduced the pastel tones of anemones and sweet peas. The hostess wore a frock of river green velvet, and her daughter. Miss Beth McClurg, was in a floral dress.
