CROQUET SEASON

Opening Ceremony At

Eastbourne

A most enjoyable afternoon was spent on the Eastbourne Croquet Club’s lawns on Tuesday, the occasion being the official opening of the 1937-38 season. Owing to the indisposition of Mrs. E. W. Wise, president, the visitors were welcomed by Mcsdames Heenan and Child, vice-presidents. Mrs. W. S. Austin, president of the Wellington Croquet Association, after a few interesting remarks on the game of croquet, played the first ball through a hoop and declared the lawns open for play. A bouquet of yellow iris and tulips was presented to Mrs. Austin, and Mr. Wise was asked to take a posy of rosebuds and lily of the valley to Mrs. Wise. Afternoon tea was served, the tables being decorated in the club’s colours with yellow poppies and fern. Competitions were held during the afternoon, the following being the winners: Angles, Mrs. W. E. Caldow; ladder, Mr. E. W. Wise; squares, Mrs. Hutchison; target, Miss Bates.
