HIGHER STIPENDS

Anglican Synod Bill By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, October 20. A bill to increase minimum stipends in parishes was read a second time and put through the committee stages by the Anglican Synod last night. In Otago and Southland the minimum is £3OO, as compared with £350 elsewhere. The bill raises the level to £320 where a vicarage is provided and £3BO otherwise. Dean Cruickshank said he felt compelled to suggest to the laity never to be deluded into thinking a clergyman received his salary. What provision was made for poor relief? Far too much of it came out of the clergyman’s own pocket. Such poor relief and ordinary parochial hospitality were a tremendous drain on resources, particularly for young vicars. Moreover, he would like to say that many laymen abused that hospitality.
