WAIRARAPA RAILWAY

Question Of Deviation Reports on the suggested deviation of the Wairarapa railway line are at present under consideration by the Government, according to a statemen made by the Minister of Public Works, Hon. R. Semple, in the House of Representatives yesterday. The question was raised by Messrs. J. Robertson (Government, Masterton) and B. Roberts (Government, Wairarapa), who pointed out the handicap imposed upon the Wairarapa district by the inadequacy of the present transport facilities over the Rimutaka Hill. “As far back as 1923,” said the Minister, “an exhaustive report was prepared by the Public Works Department setting out alternative routes to. give access to the Wairarapa, and this report, together with a recent report prepared by the Railways Department, has been submitted to the Government. Careful consideration is being given to these reports, and an announcement will lie made as soon as possible.”
