Plan To Hand Over City To Franco
5000 PERSONS ALLEGED TO BE INVOLVED

General Miaja asserts that 5000 persons are connected with the Fascist plot revealed in Madrid. Those arrested include 18 women, army officers, and officials. •
The conspirators aimed at organising a body from refugees and embassies who, with subverted police and troops, would hand over Madrid to General Franco. The plotters used calendar leaves as a code and concealed the identity of the conspirators by the use of dates as names. The Chilean and Argentine Embassies repudiate charges that they were involved in the plot. SPANISH DESERTERS Naval Men Detained In Exeter Prison
London, September 26.
Twelve more members of the crew, including officers, who have deserted from the Spanish destroyer Jose Luis Diez, which was crippled in an aitraid and put into Faitmouth, voluntarily surrendered at the Falmouth police station. Others were arrested sleeping in the woods.
All declared that they disliked the new commander and were tired of the war and willing to go anywhere but to Spain, where they had to fight their brothers. ,
The police escorted them to the Exeter prison to join the 66 deserters who had been detained previously.
The destroyer has departed for Spain.
