CRICKET AT PETONE

Council Decides Charge

For Wickets

The Petone Borough Council has decided to charge cricket clubs 11/- a wicket each playing Saturday, but will cut and mark the wickets and supply the topdressing, as is done by other local bodies making a similar charge. Protests against the increased charge were recently made by the Hutt Valley Cricket Association and the Petone Cricket Club. The reserves committee, which considered the protests, was unable to recommend a reduction in the charge, but agreed that the council should cut and mark the wickets and supply topdressing.

During the depression only nominal fees were charged, but now that most of the young players were in work it was felt that they should contribute a little more, said Mr. J. C. Burns at the meeting of the council last night. The mayor, Mr. A, Scholefield, said that £3OO would be spent on soil for topdressing. Allocation of Wickets. It was decided to allocate the wickets as applied for:—Petone Cricket Club, three wickets on the Recreation Ground and a practice wicket; Hutt Valley Cricket Association, three wickets on North Park, three at McEwan Park, and two further wickets on the Recreation Ground until the middle of January. (These wickets will be on the lower Rugby ground and men’s hockey ground.) For the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College there will be a wicket available until the middle of January and a separate patch of ground may be allocated for use in practice matches, as desired. Sports Grounds. The Hutt Valley Cricket Association's request that immediate steps be taken to provide additional sports grounds was considered, but it was decided to reply that, because of the limited area of land available, this was not possible.
