LORRY’S 20-FOOT FALL

Driver’s Amazing Escape

By Telegraph—Press Association. Blenheim, September 27.

Ralph Bar.,, the driver of a Nelsonowned motor-lorry, had an amazing escape on Saturday afternoon when his vehicle, heavily laden with timber and grain and with a loaded trailer attached, crashed down a 20-foot bank into 12 feet of water in the Pelorus River, half-way between Blenheim and Nelson.

The accident occurred when the lorry was overtaking a trap, behind which a horse was being led. At the lorry’s approach the animal reared, causing Bary to pull aside suddenly. The trailer left the highway, dragging the lorry, which rolled over several times. Luckily for the driver the vehicle finished up in the water on its side and he was able to escape from the cab through the open window. Bary suffered a severe hand wound and a slight head Injury.
