Stench bombs and (ear gas bombs simultaneously exploded in 24 New York cinemas half-way through the night screenings. Thousands stampeded into the streets to escape the choking, nauseating fumes. Fifty were injured, the majority receiving minor burns and cuts. Police squads rushed to the theatres to control the panic-stricken crowds. The outrage is attributed to a labour dispute.
