Sir James Gunson, Auckland, was a passenger in the Mataroa, which left Wellington on Saturday evening for England. He will be abroad about six months.

Mr. C. Wescott, of C. C. Wakefield and Co., Ltd., Wellington, returned by the Awatea from Sydney yesterday. Mr. W. E. Reid will return to Wellington from a business trip abroad by lhe Akaroa, which is due on Friday from Southampton, via Auckland. Mr. J. W. Brodie, managing director of British and Dominion Traders Ltd., arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Awatea from Sydney.

Mr. D. S. Murray, a director of Messrs. Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., returned to Wellington yesterday by the Awatea from Sydney.

Mr. P. M. Poelman, a shipping merchant from Java, arrived in Wellington yesterday by the Awatea from Sydney. He is on a world tour with bis wife, and is to spend about a week m New Zealand.

Captain A. 11. L. Sugden, New Zealand Staff Corps, formerly of Napier, returned to the Dominion by the Akaroa which arrived at Auckland on Friday after taking .a small arms course in England extending over two years. Mr. Erie P. Haslanl, a New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, of Balliol College, Oxford, has taken his B.A. degree in Modern Greats with second-class honours. Mr. Haslam is a son of the RevJ. H. Haslam, Brooklyn. Mr. O. A. Banner, headmaster of Kelburu Normal School, Wellington, bag been appointed treasurer of the New Zealand Educational Institute in succession to Mr. J. 11. M. Finlayson, 8.A., who was recently appointed to tiie inspectorate in the Otago district.

Mr. IL McCormick, chairman of the Olympic ami British Empire Games Association, and secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, attended the New Zealand cross-coun-try championships at Timaru and lias now returned to Wellington. Mr. F. K. Hunt, coroner at Auckland, is to leave Auckland to-day by the Mattia for the Cook Islands, where be is to hear a case in his capacity of a judge of the High Court of the Cook Islands. He will be away about three weeks.
