GRAND OPERA CONTEST
Winner to Study in
Australia
Intending not to return to New Zealand after visiting Ballarat and Melbourne, Mr. A. E. Chappell, winner of “The Dominion” Newspaper Grand Opera Contest at the Wellington competitions, yesterday relinquished his position with the Charles Haines Advertising Agency, Ltd. Mr. Chappell will depart from his native shores in the Awatea, sailing from Wellington on September 17. In the meantime he will visit his home in Christchurch. The Victorian contest will commence in the first week in October. After singing in the “Sun” aria from grand opera contest, the expenses of competition in which is Mr. Chappell’s reward for winning the Wellington competitions, he will continue his vocal studies. Tuition Fees Sir, —I understand that Mr. A. E. Chappell, winner of this year's “Dominion” Aria Contest, is shortly proceeding to Australia with .the intention of furthering his musical studies, and it has occurred to me that something should be done for him in the way of practical financial assistance. In my opinion, this .young man has a wonderful future ahead of him, and we should see to it that he is not lacking in financial resources. He is already a credit to New Zealand, and will assuredly go a long way in his profession. Tuition such as Mr. Chappell is seeking is expensive, and I have pleasure in enclosing 10/- in the hope that others will follow my example, with a view to building up a substantial amount that will materially assist Mr. Chappell in his chosen career. —I am, etc.,
ARIA. [The sum of 10/- was enclosed with the above letter.]
