CLERICAL WORKERS

Appeal Court’s Judgment CORRECTION OF MISTAKES BY LEGISLATION “If the intention of the Government is not expressed in legislation it soon will be,” said the Prime Minister, lit. Hon. M. J. Savage, when referring yes terday to the Appeal Court’s judgment in the clerical workers’ case. Mr. Savage said that any difficulties arising out of the court’s decision would be put right. “We cannot expect the court to give a decision against what the law actually expresses in words,” said Mr. Savage. “One can hardly be surprised at. mistakes in the law, No doubt we will have them, and we will have to correct them. I said that long ago, when we made mistakes, and when we found we had made them, we would correct them. That applies in this particular case. “The intentions of the Government will be carried out. We are not going to change our course simply because we made a mistake in expressing our intention. The court’s job is to decide what is there —not what our intentions are. If nothing can be done without legislation, then we will have legislation.” HEARING OF DISPUTE ADJOURNED » -■ By Telegraph—Press Association. New Plymouth, August 3. Immediate repercussions of the Appeal Court’s judgment quashing the Otago Clerical Workers’ Award were felt at New Plymouth when the Arbitration Court found itself unable to proceed with three Taranaki applications. The most important was the muchdiscussed clerical workers’ dispute, to which more than 1100 employers have been joined as parties. This was adjourned sine die. In addition, Mr. Justice O’Regan found it necessary, pending receipj: of a copy of the judgment, to hold over applications by the Engine Drivers’ and Vehicular Drivers’ Unions to add parties to the awards.
