FRUIT GUARANTEE
Increase Being Considered Possibility of an increase in the Government guarantee of 10/6 a ease for fruit exported is mentioned in the annual report of the Fruit Export Control Board. "Shortly after the settlement of past guarantee claims, the board negotiated fo r a guarantee for the present season,’ - states the report, "'rhe Government held the opinion that the guarantee should apply Io each individual exporter and that the rate should be r-ufii-cient to cover all marketing costs plus costs of production on an average efficient and economic orchard. The Government determined that 10/- a case was sufficient for this purpose. At a later date the Government determined on a wage scale to be paid to orchard employees and the guarantee rate was increased to 10/t> to enable those wages to be paid. There exists in the Indus try doubt as to whether 10/G a ease is sufficient to meet all marketing and packing costs and leave eutlicieui i>; cover cost of production under presentday conditions. However, it is understood that the Government, is investigating this matter further.”
