English Speaking Union Musical Evening

Shaded lights, and arum lilies mid iceland poppies set in bowls from which trails of greenery spilled _ their freshness, gave colour and life to the lounge of the National Club last night, when a very pleasant musical evening was held by the musical and dramatic circles of the English-Speaking Union. The opportunity was also taken of bidding farewell to Mrs. M. G. Phelan, who is leaving shortly for a trip to England and America. After the reading of the union s creed. Mrs. D. V. Claridge. chairwoman of the English-Speaking Union, introduced the guest of honour, Mrs. Charles Gardner, who is a Visitor from Hastings. On behalf of the musical circle, its leader, Mrs. H. Ainslie presented Mrs. Phelan (who wore an attractive frock of black chiffon velvet with a silver girdle) with a beautiful bouquet of pink cyclamen, hyacinths, and maidenhair fern, tied with a cluster of purple ribbons. Mrs. Ainslie. who was the hostess for the evening, was wearing a very becoming frock of lavender georgette finished with a purple velvet sash and posy of parma violets. An instrumental trio, comprising Mrs. Charles McDonald and the Misses Ormie Reid and Olga Burton, was heard in several much-appreciated items, and these were followed _by songs by Mr. E. L. Riley and Mrs. Ainslie. Ready applause greeted very fine performances, and a play-reading, “The Pros and Cons of Marriage,” was given bv the following members of the dramatic circle: Miss Kathleen Turnbull, Miss Dorothy Tanner, Miss Irene Franklin, and Mr. Maurice Solomon. An appreciative audience listened with keen attention to this and also to further vocal items by Mr. Allan Howard, Mrs. Arnold Downer, and Mr, W. G. Chapple. A buffet supper, served in the din-ing-room, brought a very pleasant evening to a close.

A Wedding Anniversary. To celebrate the first anniversary of the marriage of their daughter Lulu to Mr. Alexander Mclntosh, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Dyer held a family gathering, which took the form of a 5-to-7 party, at their home in Tinakori Road on Thursday. There were about 24 present A cablegram had been received from Mr. and Mrs Mclntosh during the day from Bombay, where they are living, and many good wishes to them were extended by all present. Mr. T. E. Y. Seddon, Mrs. Mclntosh’s uncle, proposed the health of Mr. and Mrs. Mclntosh, this being drunk with musical honours. Farewell Parties

Mrs. Herbert Richardson, who left Wellington last night; to stay with her son, Mr. John Richardson, who has been' transferred to Christchurch, has been the guest of honour at a number of parties during the past week or two. Mrs. A. L. Longmore, Brougham Street, gave a most delightful afternoon for her, and Mrs. Noel Henderson a very happy and enjoyable dinner party at< the Hotel St. George, followed by a picture party. Mrs. Charles Gray, Pukerua Bay, entertained a number of friends at a “five to seven” cocktail party in Mrs. Richardson’s honour, at the Royal Oak Hotel, and in addition to these there have been numerous other parties and teas given by wellwishing friends. Pale pink winter roses, daphne and tangerine berries made a gay splash of colour in Mrs. Trnby King's drawingroom at her home in New Plymouth on a recent evening, when Miss Josephine King entertained at mail jongg in honour of her guests, Miss Barbara Malfroy, Wellington. In the dining-room there were bovyls of spring bulbs and on the supper table iceland .poppies were arranged. Miss King wore a frock of Wallis blue pin-spotted crepe de chine made with draped sleeves and slight train. Miss Malfroy’s frock was of magnolia crepe patterned in shades of apricot and blue, with a swatbed belt of blue velvet. With this she wore a velvet cape of French blue. Cocktails of Welcome

Captain and Mrs. V. G. Webb were host and hostess at a cheery five to seven party which they gave at their home in Highland Park yesterday to welcome home Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Jeffery, who returned to Wellington by the Rangitata from London. Mrs. Webb was wearing a smart cocktail ensemble of black. The rooms were charmingly decorated with a profusion of spring flowers and scarlet berries, and during the serving of a variety of cocktails and their accompanying savoury snacks, all present took the opportunity of welcoming the guests of honour, and gathered around fo bear their various experiences abroad.
